Who is God?
Who Is God? What Is God? How Can We Know God?
Who Is God? The Fact
The Bible begins with the foundational assumption that God exists: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1, NKJV). The existence of God is so evident through creation and the inner conscience of man that Scripture declares, “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Psalm 14:1, NKJV). Creation itself testifies to God’s presence, power, and divinity: “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20, NKJV).
Rather than attempting to prove God’s existence, the Bible reveals His nature, character, and works, inviting us to know Him personally. God’s existence is the starting point for understanding everything else.
Who Is God? The Definition
Understanding who God is begins with a right definition. Incorrect ideas about God lead to idolatry, as He warns in Psalm 50:21, NKJV: “You thought that I was altogether like you; but I will rebuke you.” God is not like us; He is the Supreme Being, the Creator and Sustainer of all that exists, and the Self-existent One who is perfect in power, goodness, and wisdom.
This truth sets Him apart from all creation and should inspire reverence and awe in our hearts: “To whom then will you liken Me, or to whom shall I be equal?” says the Holy One (Isaiah 40:25, NKJV).
Who Is God? His Nature
God’s nature is revealed to us in Scripture, and He has graciously made Himself known so that we can understand and worship Him rightly.
God is Spirit: “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24, NKJV). As spirit, God is intangible and not limited by physical constraints.
God is Triune: God exists as one God in three Persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. At Jesus’ baptism, all three Persons are revealed: “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased’” (Matthew 3:16–17, NKJV).
God is Infinite: “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen” (1 Timothy 1:17, NKJV).
God is Incomparable: “Therefore You are great, O Lord God. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You” (2 Samuel 7:22, NKJV).
God is Unchanging: “For I am the Lord, I do not change” (Malachi 3:6, NKJV).
God is Omnipresent: “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?” (Psalm 139:7–12, NKJV).
God is Omniscient: “Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite” (Psalm 147:5, NKJV).
God is Omnipotent: “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!” (Revelation 19:6, NKJV).
Who Is God? His Character
The Bible reveals the character of God, which is perfect and holy:
God is Just: “Because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained” (Acts 17:31, NKJV).
God is Loving: “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ” (Ephesians 2:4–5, NKJV).
God is Truthful: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6, NKJV).
God is Holy: “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5, NKJV).
God is Compassionate: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:3, NKJV).
God is Merciful: “For He says to Moses, ‘I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion’” (Romans 9:15, NKJV).
God is Gracious: “Those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:17, NKJV).
God is Forgiving: “But there is forgiveness with You, that You may be feared” (Psalm 130:4, NKJV).
Who Is God? His Work
God’s works reveal His nature and plan for humanity:
Creator: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1, NKJV).
Sustainer: “And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist” (Colossians 1:17, NKJV).
Redeemer: “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us” (Galatians 3:13, NKJV).
Draws to Christ: “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him” (John 6:44, NKJV).
Discipliner: “For whom the Lord loves He chastens” (Hebrews 12:6, NKJV).
Judge: “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it” (Revelation 20:11, NKJV).
Who Is God? A Relationship with Him
God desires a personal relationship with us through His Son, Jesus Christ: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14, NKJV). Jesus is the bridge between God and man: “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5, NKJV). Through Him, we have forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7, NKJV), reconciliation with God (Romans 5:10, NKJV), and eternal salvation (2 Timothy 2:10, NKJV).
Conclusion
To know God is to look at Jesus Christ: “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9, NKJV). Through faith in Christ, we can experience God’s love, grace, and forgiveness, and enjoy an eternal relationship with Him.
